Mane, muzzle and rounded body are cut with simple tools, so the six share one design while differing slightly in the tilt of a brow, the depth of a cut or the direction the grain happens to run.

AFRICAN MAHOGANY: Cut from African Mahogany, a close grained hardwood with warm reddish brown tones that deepen as the surface catches light. The wood is worked and smoothed by hand, leaving a solid ring that slides over a folded napkin without splitting and stacks easily in a drawer between meals.

SET CONTENTS AND CARE: The set contains six rings, packed in a box measuring 5 x 5 x 5 in at about 1 lb. Because each is carved and finished individually, slight variances in size and design are normal. Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth, and keep the wood away from standing water, long hours of direct sun and the dishwasher.

TABLE SETTINGS AND GIFTS: Slide them onto linen or cotton napkins for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Sunday dinner or a safari themed table, where carved lions pair naturally with stoneware, rattan chargers, raw wood boards and leafy greenery. Boxed as six, the set makes a considered housewarming, wedding registry, hostess or birthday gift.

REFORESTATION AND FAIR WAGES: The Kenyan craftspeople who carve these rings are trained in the need for reforestation, so the hardwood they depend on stays available for years to come and the work keeps providing a sustainable income across generations. Global Crafts is a member of the Fair Trade Federation, an alternative model valuing people, planet and profit equally.

› See more product details
